Thermi, Greece (June 16, 2005) – The Aerosol and Particle Technology Laboratory (APTL) of CERTH/CPERI is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the Global 100 Eco-Tech Award at the EXPO 2005 in Aichi, Japan for the technology "Production of Hydrogen Through the Splitting of Water with Solar Energy". The technology was one of the entries nominated by the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology for the Greek participation to the Global 100 Eco-Tech Awards competition.

The Japan Association for the 2005 World Exposition and Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Inc. have organized the Global 100 Eco-Tech Awards program which commends 100 global environmental technologies that contribute significantly to the resolution of global environmental problems and to the creation of a sustainable future (http://www.expo2005greece.gr/web/pages.fds?lang=1&page=400).

APTL has lead the development of the nominated innovative hydrogen production technology which is based on exclusively renewable resources: solar energy and water, within the European project HYDROSOL.

Dr. Athanasios G. Konstandopoulos, APTL's Director and Coordinator of project HYDROSOL will receive the Award, which is accompanied by a 1,000,000 Yen prize on September 1, 2005 in a special ceremony to be held in Nagoya city, Japan. On receiving news of the Award, Konstandopoulos said: "We are very happy to receive this Award at a moment when we are preparing to celebrate the 10 years from the foundation of our laboratory. The Award represents an important recognition of our research accomplishments and it will boost further our efforts to contribute to the long term energy and economic future of our country, as well as other regions of the world, which have the privilege to be endowed by an enormous solar potential. I would like to thank all the people from APTL that have contributed to this success as well as our colleagues in project HYDROSOL. I am also grateful to the European Commission for its sustained support of our research in this area".
